4 Plants That Help Clean the Air You Breathe

By Dr Dunner February 14, 2018
Purfy Air

Indoor air pollutants are ranked among the top five environmental risks to public health. The inactive, motionless air of the indoors allow pollutants to build up larger amounts than is good for human health. With people spending more than 90 percent of their time indoors, the risk is only greater. Formaldehyde is a common toxic compound that can be found in indoor environments, and is more dangerous in areas that have poor ventilation. Enter plants. As you may remember from 2nd grade science, we breathe in oxygen and out carbon dioxide. Plants, our friends, breathe in that carbon dioxide and release the oxygen that we need to breathe. How do they clean the air? When the plants take in carbon dioxide, they also absorb some of the particulates in the air that may be harmful to our health. Furthermore, the microorganisms contained in their soil also helps clean the air.

Garden Mum

Garden Mums are abundant and better yet, inexpensive. They help remove ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene from the air.

Spider Plant

Spider plants help remove formaldehyde and xylene from the air. They are also extremely easy to grow, making them ideal for beginners and forgetful owners. These plants like bright, indirect sunlight and shoot flowers that after time will grow into baby spider plants.

Snake Plant/Mother-in-Law’s Tongue

Coincidentally, this plant is one of the hardest houseplants to kill. It only requires occasional watering, and prefers dry conditions and only some sun. Bonus points for removing benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and xylene from the air.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is actually easy to care for and has leaves that contain a clear liquid that many of you are familiar with in the summertime with sunburn — containing vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, and other compounds with wound-healing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties! Bonus points for removing formaldehyde from the air!
